I have never let my schooling interfere with my education

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.

MarkTwainMark Twain is right.  School and education are two different things.  There are things we learn in school that may sometimes be contrary to things that we learn or experience outside.  Mark Twain reminds us that we sometimes need to forgo what we learned in school for what the world has to teach us.  There are some things that we just can’t learn in school.  That is why we need to learn from all of our experiences.

Let’s take English for example.  Learning English should not be just confined to the four walls of the classroom.  It needs to be taken outside.  It must become a lifestyle.  It must go beyond “schooling.”  A true English education, or learning English, must extend to conversations with friends outside of the classroom.  When a student has an environment conducive to learning English, they become more proficient.

Live as if you were to Die Tomorrow. Learn as if you were to Live Forever

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

live-as-if-you-were-to-die-tomorrow-learn-as-if-you-were-to-live-forever-mahatma-gandhiI love this quote by Mahatma Gandhibecause it teaches us how to make the most out of life.  Sometimes, we live so normally, so average.  I have had so many Filipino students who have wished for a “stable life.”  I always tell them to be careful with what they ask for, because as the saying goes, you might just get it.  When we ask for a stable life, nothing really happens; instead, we should ask for excitement and adventure, so that we could really live.  When we live as if we were to die tomorrow, we become more daring, more bold, more outgoing, and we allow ourselves to go beyond what we would normally do.

If we were to learn as if we were to live forever, we are always enthusiastic about new learning, new experiences, new education.  Because when we live forever, we wouldn’t want the same old thing; we would wish for new ideas to excite as everyday.  I do my very best to instill this kind of perspective to my students and clients so that they have more vim and vigor when it comes to living and learning.

Education is not the Filling of a Pail, but the Lighting of a Fire

Education is not the filling of the pail, but the lighting of the fire.

Education Pail FireThis quote highlights my teaching approach.  I have been teaching since I can remember.  As the oldest of five children, I have taught my siblings not only academic subjects, but also discipline, leadership, responsibility, and morals.  I became a tutor in high school, a writing consultant as for university students in college, and a corporate trainer after graduation.  Now, I am an entrepreneur, the co-founder of the American Institute for English Proficiency, with three locations in the Philippines: Makati, Quezon City, and Baguio.

The filling of the pail is the information and knowledge we impart to our students.  However, it is much more important to to light their fire, to give them the inspiration to become better more productive members of society.  Often times, we are so focused on teaching our students what is in the book that we forget to teaching how to use the book, how to question the book, how to apply the learning from the book.  We teach them the who, what,  where, and  when, but we forget to realize that the why and the how are far more important.  When we fill a pail, it may someday run out of water and be empty, and someone needs to keep filling it; but if we ignite the fire, it may continue burning on its own.
